Cal State S4 is funded!

Cal State S4 logo
Since Fall 2011, our campus has been centrally involved in a systemwide initiative called Cal State S4 to track placements related to service learning, internships & field trips.

Through a partnership between the CSU Center for Community Engagement and Cal State Monterey Bay, Web Services has developed software for our campus that we've shared internally with twelve other CSU campuses, four of which will pilot the software this Fall.

In other words, we've created a software start-up company within the CSU. And now we've learned the Chancellor's Office has provided one-time funding that allows the CSU to hire a full-time support person housed on our campus and service the twelve participating campuses through FY12-13.

Open Source

We've also released the software itself as "free to use" (i.e. open source) but with no support, and several universities have expressed interest, including Antioch College (Ohio) and Arizona State University.

In the end it will help our campus and the system to:
  • adhere to CSU Executive Orders 1064 (internships) and 1062 (field trips);
  • highlight the footprint of engagement in their surrounding community;
  • provide important data for decision-makers at the state and federal level;
  • lower systemwide insurance costs;
  • better understand any correlation between graduation rate and community engagement.
